Ribbed Bobble Hat Crochet Pattern

Posted by Claire Turner on

I’ve made quite a few of these bobble hats over the last few years. It’s my go to pattern – every year the kids and myself get a new hat!  The pattern is available to download from my website but I thought I would share it on my blog too!
Here is the link if you would like to download the PDF version.
I came up with this pattern because I wanted a ribbed bobble hat but I didn’t want to knit one! I used Stylcraft Special chunky which is available 36 shades and is available to buy here:

Heres the pattern:

To fit head circumference:

Adult

  22 inch

200g Stylecraft Special Chunky - Lime

Child

  19 inch

100g Stylecraft Special Chunky - Purple

Toddler

  18 inch

100g Stylecraft Special Chunky - Storm Blue

You will need:

  • Stylecraft Special Chunky
  • 6mm Crochet Hook
  • Darning needle

Tension: 12 sts and 8 rows to 10cm using half treble crochet through the back loop and a 6mm hook.

Written in UK terms.

Abbreviations

  • ch - chain
  • st - stitch
  • htr - half treble crochet
  • tbl - through back loop only
  • slst - slip stitch
  • dc - double crochet

The sizes for the hats are written :   Adult (child, toddler)

To begin chain 41 (36, 33)

Row 1   In the second chain from the hook htr into each chain across,ch1, turn.

Tip - To create the ribbed effect you will need to work through the back loop only (tbl).

Working in the back loop throughout (tbl)

Row 2   slst into first 2 stitches, dc into next 2 stitches, Work htr into each st along , ch2, turn.

Tip - By slightly decreasing on the first 4 stitches of every other row, you will be shaping the top of the hat so that there is not any excess material when you gather your hat when finishing it off.

Row 3 htr in 2ch from hook, htr into each st along, ch1, turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 for 37 ( 31, 31)  ending on a wrong side row, finish off leaving a long thread for sewing.

To make up:
Using a darning needle sew up the side of your hat, through the back loop only.

Tip - Sewing through the back loop will keep the rib pattern so that the seam isn't visible.

Gather the hat at the top, sew over the hole.

Make a large pom pom and sew on the top

I hope you like it!
